Check it yourself
How do you check a Stripe integration before hiring anyone?
Stripe’s own docs warn that without signature verification an attacker could send fake webhook events to your endpoint, and that the same event can arrive more than once. These 3 checks need only your code.
| Check | Run this | A pass looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Does the webhook check Stripe’s signature? | grep -rnE "constructEvent|construct_event|parseEventNotification|parse_event_notification|Stripe-Signature" . --exclude-dir=node_modules --exclude-dir=.git | A match inside your own webhook route, called on the raw request body with the whsec_ signing secret. No match in your code means the route may accept fake events: look for another verification call before you rely on it. |
| Does it skip events it has already handled? | grep -rnE "(evt|event|stripeEvent)(\.id|\[.id.\])|event_id" . --exclude-dir=node_modules --exclude-dir=.git | A match only starts the check: the handler should store each event ID it processes and return early on a repeat, so a retried event can’t grant access or send an email twice. Stripe adds that two separate events can describe the same change, so key on the object ID and event type as well. |
| Is a secret or restricted key anywhere it shouldn’t be? | grep -rnE "[sr]k_(live|test)_[A-Za-z0-9]+" . --exclude-dir=node_modules --exclude-dir=.git --exclude-dir=dist | No matches in committed code. A hit in a local .env file is fine if that file is never committed. Only the publishable pk_ key is safe in front-end code. |
