The Four Kinds of Software Maintenance

Corrective: fixing what broke

Bugs and failures your users report, plus the ones crash reporting catches first. We reproduce, fix, add a regression test where it fits, and ship the fix.

Adaptive: keeping up with the platforms

New iOS and Android releases, Google Play target API deadlines, Xcode minimums, Firebase and Flutter SDK upgrades, and browser changes for web apps.

Perfective: making it better

Small feature enhancements, UX polish, faster screens and cheaper queries. On the Professional plan this is where most of the monthly hours go.

Preventive: fixing problems before users see them

Dependency and security updates, Firestore rules reviews, removing dead code, and watching error rates and costs so a slow leak gets fixed early.

Store Deadlines That Force Updates

Google Play target API level

Since August 31, 2026, new apps and app updates on Google Play must target Android 16 (API level 36), and existing apps must target at least Android 15 (API level 35) to stay available to new users on newer devices (Android Developers). Every year the floor moves up, so an app nobody touches slowly disappears for new users.

Apple App Store improvements

Apple can flag apps for removal when they haven't been updated in three years and are barely downloaded (Apple Developer). New Xcode and SDK minimums also arrive with each major iOS release.

Dependencies and backends

Flutter, Firebase SDKs, Node.js runtimes for Cloud Functions and payment SDKs all deprecate old versions on their own schedules. We track them so upgrades happen on a calm week, not the week something stops building.

It keeps working until a platform changes underneath it. Google Play requires new apps and updates to target a recent Android API level, and existing apps that fall behind stop being offered to new users on newer devices. Apple can flag apps for removal when they haven't been updated in three years and are rarely downloaded. Security fixes in libraries and SDKs also stop reaching an app that never ships an update.

Do you maintain apps you didn't build?

Yes, mostly Flutter apps, Vue or Nuxt web apps and Firebase or Google Cloud backends. We start with a paid audit of the code, build setup and store accounts so the first month isn't spent guessing.

Do you offer emergency support?

On a maintenance plan, critical issues such as app crashes, security problems, server downtime and payment failures go to the front of the queue during business hours (Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 18:00 Eastern Time). The fix includes triage, a root cause, a hotfix release and a short written incident report. We don't offer round-the-clock on-call support.
