Stripe BillingStripe subscription canceled, but access in the app is wrong

A customer cancels, and either they lose access the same day although they paid for the month, or they keep access forever. Both usually come from reading the wrong Stripe event. Here’s how cancellation works in Stripe’s own words, and the fix, or hand it over at a fixed price.

Short answer

When a customer cancels at period end, the subscription runs on until the period ends, cancel_at_period_end becomes true, and Stripe sends customer.subscription.updated. Access should continue until the period ends. When it ends, Stripe sends customer.subscription.deleted: that’s the event that should remove access. Removing access on the update cuts people off early; ignoring the deleted event never removes it.

Which event means what, and the fix

  1. 01

Access removed as soon as they cancel

“This allows the subscription to complete the duration of time the customer has already paid for.” Stripe, Cancel subscriptions

If your webhook handler treats customer.subscription.updated with cancel_at_period_end set as a cancellation, paying customers lose access early. Show “Cancels on [date]” in the app instead, and keep access until the subscription actually ends.

  2. 02

    Access never removed

“The cancellation can result from a direct call to delete the subscription or when a subscription with cancel_at_period_end: true reaches the end of its billing period.” Stripe, Cancel subscriptions

If nothing listens for customer.subscription.deleted, the app never learns the subscription ended. Handle it, find the user by the customer or subscription ID, and remove access.

  3. 03

A canceled customer changed their mind

“To stop a scheduled cancellation using the API, set cancel_at_period_end to false.” Stripe, Cancel subscriptions

A scheduled cancellation can be undone any time before the period ends by setting cancel_at_period_end back to false. Stripe then sends another customer.subscription.updated, so clear the “Cancels on” notice when it arrives.

Rather hand it over?

Fixed scope, fixed price, paid upfront. The work happens in writing; no call needed.

Questions

More on this error

Does canceling in the Stripe Dashboard end it right away?

By default, Stripe says cancellation takes effect immediately. Choose to cancel at the end of the period if the customer should keep what they paid for.

Should I check the subscription status instead of events?

Use the events to stay up to date, and read the subscription’s status and cancel_at_period_end when you need the current state, for example when the user opens their billing page.

Can you fix it for me?

If one bug is the whole problem, the App Fix Ticket covers it: a written diagnosis first, then the fix. If the app has more going on, the Launch Check is a written check of the whole app. Each issue found is rated critical, high, medium or low, with where it is and how it was confirmed. No issues worth fixing, no charge. If the Launch Check finds nothing rated medium or higher, Simon refunds the full $450. You keep the report either way.
