Xcode signing errorXcode: Signing for “Runner” requires a development team

You open the iOS project to archive your first build for TestFlight, and Xcode stops with Signing for “Runner” requires a development team. Xcode needs to know which Apple Developer account signs the app. Here’s where to set it, from Flutter’s iOS release guide, or hand it over at a fixed price.

Short answer

Select the Runner target in Xcode, open Signing & Capabilities, keep Automatically manage signing on, and choose your team. If your team isn’t listed, add your Apple account first. Then check that the Bundle Identifier matches the App ID you registered.

What Xcode is missing, and the fix

  1. 01

    No team is selected

“Select the team associated with your registered Apple Developer account.” Flutter, Build and release an iOS app

Each target that gets signed needs a team. In Xcode, select the Runner target, open the Signing & Capabilities tab, and pick your team in the Team menu. Flutter’s guide says automatic signing, on by default, is enough for most apps.

  2. 02

Your Apple account isn’t in Xcode

“If required, select Add Account..., then update this setting.” Flutter, Build and release an iOS app

The Team menu only lists teams from accounts signed in to Xcode. If yours is missing, add the Apple account you use for the Apple Developer Program, then come back and pick the team.

  3. 03

The bundle ID doesn’t match your App ID

“The App ID you registered on App Store Connect.” Flutter, Build and release an iOS app

Flutter’s guide lists the Bundle Identifier, in the General tab, as the App ID you registered. If yours differs, set it to match before you archive.

Checked against the vendor’s docs on : Flutter docs: Build and release an iOS app.

Rather hand it over?

Fixed scope, fixed price, paid upfront. The work happens in writing; no call needed.

Questions

More on this error

Do I need a paid Apple Developer account?

Flutter’s guide tells you to select the team associated with your registered Apple Developer account, so yes, you need one registered. Enrollment details are on Apple’s site.

Is this only for Flutter apps?

No. Runner is the name Flutter gives the iOS target, but any Xcode project shows the same message with its own target name, and the fix is the same.

Can you fix it for me?

If one bug is the whole problem, the App Fix Ticket covers it: a written diagnosis first, then the fix. If the app has more going on, the Launch Check is a written check of the whole app. Each issue found is rated critical, high, medium or low, with where it is and how it was confirmed. No issues worth fixing, no charge. If the Launch Check finds nothing rated medium or higher, Simon refunds the full $450. You keep the report either way.
