OpenAI API errorOpenAI 401 “Incorrect API key provided” or “Invalid Authentication”

The AI feature worked, then every request returns 401. OpenAI uses a few different 401 messages, and each points to a different fix: a wrong or deleted key, a key from another project, or an account that left its organization. Here is each one in OpenAI’s words, or hand it over at a fixed price.

Short answer

Read the exact 401 message. For Incorrect API key provided, check the key for a typo or extra space, confirm it belongs to the right organization and project, and generate a new one if it was deleted. For Invalid Authentication, check the key and organization ID you send. For the membership message, get invited back to an organization.

Why OpenAI returns 401, and the fix

  1. 01

The key has a typo, an extra space or was deleted

“Your API key contains a typo or an extra space.” OpenAI, Error codes

A key pasted into an environment variable with a trailing space or a missing character fails on every request. So does a key someone deleted or deactivated in the dashboard. Copy the key again or generate a new one, and replace it everywhere your app reads it.

  2. 02

The key belongs to a different organization or project

“You are using a different API key than the one assigned to the requesting organization or project.” OpenAI, Error codes

A key is assigned to an organization or project. If the app sends a key that belongs to a different organization or project than your request header, or uses a key without permission for the endpoint, OpenAI rejects it. Check the key and organization ID in your request header against your account settings.

  3. 03

An old key is still being used somewhere

“An old, revoked API key might be cached locally.” OpenAI, Error codes

After you rotate a key, an old one can still be in use: a cached value, a second environment variable, or a deploy that never picked up the new value. In our experience the host’s production environment is the usual place, so redeploy after changing it.

  4. 04

Your account is no longer in an organization

“This error message indicates that your account is not part of an organization.” OpenAI, Error codes

This 401 has its own message. It appears when you left or were removed from the organization or project, or the organization was deleted. An organization owner can invite you back, or you can ask for a new organization.

Rather hand it over?

Fixed scope, fixed price, paid upfront. The work happens in writing; no call needed.

Questions

More on this error

It works locally but returns 401 when deployed. Why?

In our experience the deployed app is reading a different value: the key was never added to the host’s environment variables, or it was added after the last deploy. Set it on the host and redeploy.

Can we put the OpenAI key in front-end code?

We don’t. Anything in front-end code can be read by visitors. We keep the key on a server or in a backend function and have the app call that instead.

We get 401 IP not authorized. Is that the same?

No, OpenAI lists it as a separate 401. It means your request IP doesn’t match the IP allowlist configured for your project or organization. Send the request from an allowed IP, or update the allowlist settings.
