Disclosure: App369 publishes this guide and sells fixed-price Stripe work, including the App Fix Ticket for single bugs like these.
Key takeaways
- Grant access from a webhook, not the success page: Stripe says customers don't always reach the success page after paying.
- A webhook marked delivered only means your endpoint answered. If the database write fails after the 200, Stripe has nothing to retry and the error is in your own logs.
- Test mode (now called a sandbox) and live mode have separate keys, products, prices, customers and webhook endpoints. Nothing created in one exists in the other.
- A new subscription stays incomplete until its first invoice is paid. After 23 hours it becomes incomplete_expired and needs a new subscription.
- Card issuers categorize most declines as generic, so generic_decline rarely tells you why. Read the advice code before retrying.

Short answer: most Stripe problems in an app are not payment failures. Stripe takes the money, and the app never hears about it, hears about it from the wrong mode, or acts on the wrong event. Find your error below; each one links to a full fix page checked against Stripe’s documentation.
Stripe errors in a live app usually come from webhooks, test versus live mode, or subscription states the app doesn’t handle. The 12 errors below are the ones that leave paying customers without access, or stop them paying at all, in apps built by hand or with AI builders. Each fact comes from Stripe’s documentation, as checked on the linked fix page, and the order of checks is App369’s advice.
Webhooks fail or don’t update the app
A webhook is how Stripe tells your app that a payment happened, and three different faults break that link. According to Stripe’s webhook guide, “Stripe doesn’t guarantee the delivery of events in the order that they’re generated”, and the same event can arrive more than once, so a handler has to cope with both.
“No signatures found matching the expected signature for payload”
Usually the signing secret is wrong. Each endpoint has its own whsec_ secret, the Stripe CLI prints a different one for local testing, and test and live modes have separate secrets. The other common cause is a framework that parses the request body as JSON before the check: Stripe signs the raw body, byte for byte. Full steps: Stripe webhook signature error.
The customer paid, but the account wasn’t upgraded
The upgrade runs only on the success page, and the customer never reached it. Stripe calls webhooks required for subscriptions and for payment methods that succeed later. Grant access on checkout.session.completed (or invoice.paid for subscriptions), and pass your user ID as client_reference_id so the handler knows who paid. Full steps: Stripe paid but account not upgraded.
Stripe shows the webhook delivered, but the database never updated
A 200 only means your endpoint received the event. Stripe asks you to answer quickly, before the slow work, so a database write that fails afterwards never reaches Stripe and nothing retries it. Check your own server logs first, then whether the endpoint is subscribed to the event your code handles. Full steps: Stripe webhook 200 but database not updated.
Subscriptions and access go wrong
A subscription moves through several states, and an app that only checks “did they pay once” gives access at the wrong times. These four errors come from states or settings the app doesn’t handle.
Subscription stuck as incomplete or requires_action
A new subscription stays incomplete until its first invoice is paid. If the PaymentIntent says requires_action, the card needs 3D Secure: listen for invoice.payment_action_required and send the customer through it with stripe.handleNextAction. Stripe’s subscriptions overview says that “if the customer doesn’t pay within 23 hours, the subscription updates to incomplete_expired and the invoice becomes void.” Full steps: Stripe subscription incomplete.
Canceled, but access is wrong
When a customer cancels at period end, Stripe sends customer.subscription.updated and the subscription runs until the period ends. Access should continue until then. When it ends, Stripe sends customer.subscription.deleted, and that is the event that should remove access. Full steps: Stripe subscription canceled, access wrong.
“This customer has no attached payment source or default payment method”
The renewal had no card to charge. A card can be attached to a customer without being the default on the subscription or in the customer’s invoice settings. Set invoice_settings.default_payment_method, and for new subscriptions set payment_settings.save_default_payment_method to on_subscription. Full steps: Stripe no default payment method.
The customer portal doesn’t work
Portal settings are saved separately for live mode and each sandbox, and portal session links are short-lived: “New portal sessions expire after a 5 minute period,” according to Stripe’s customer portal docs. Create a new session on your server each time a signed-in customer clicks the button. Full steps: Stripe customer portal not working.
Payments are declined or wallets don’t show
A declined payment or a missing Apple Pay button stops the customer before any money moves. Both have checks in the Stripe Dashboard before any code changes.
Card declined with generic_decline
According to Stripe’s card declines guide, “Card issuers categorize most declines as generic (generic_decline), making the exact decline reason unclear.” Check the payment in the Dashboard: if Radar blocked it, the outcome type is blocked. If the bank declined it, read the advice code and don’t keep retrying a charge it says not to. Full steps: Stripe generic_decline.
Apple Pay or Google Pay doesn’t show
Register every domain and subdomain that shows the payment form on the Payment method domains page, in live mode as well as each sandbox. Then confirm the wallets are on in your Payment Method Configurations, and test on a device with a real card in the wallet, outside a private window. Full steps: Stripe Apple Pay or Google Pay not showing.
It works in test mode but fails live
Stripe’s API keys guide says “Each mode has its own set of API keys, and objects in one mode aren’t accessible to the other.” Most go-live failures are something from test mode still in the live app.
Checkout fails after switching to live keys
Put the live keys in your production settings, recreate your products and prices in live mode and switch their IDs in your code, add a live webhook endpoint with its own signing secret, then redeploy. Full steps: Stripe works in test mode, not live.
“No such customer”
Your database still holds customer IDs saved during testing, and the app now calls Stripe with live keys. Create a new live customer for each user whose saved ID came from testing, and check every server and environment uses keys from the same mode. Full steps: Stripe “No such customer”.
Stripe Connect sellers can’t get paid
Coming back to your return URL doesn’t mean a seller’s onboarding is complete. Stripe’s hosted onboarding guide says the redirect “doesn’t mean that all information has been collected, or that there are no outstanding requirements on the account.” Retrieve the account, check requirements.currently_due, and send the seller back through a new Account Link when anything is due. Full steps: Stripe Connect onboarding incomplete.
Which to check first
Check the webhook delivery log first, then which mode every key and ID comes from, then which events your code handles. App369’s full order for an app where Stripe payments just broke:
- Open the endpoint in the Stripe Dashboard and read its event deliveries: failed, missing or delivered.
- Check that every key, price ID, customer ID and webhook secret in production comes from live mode.
- Compare the endpoint’s event list with the events your code handles.
- Read your own server logs for errors after the 200.
- For one customer, look up the payment in the Dashboard and follow it to their record in your database.
The Stripe errors and fixes page lists every Stripe fix. If memberships aren’t renewing on their own, the Stripe auto-renew guide covers moving members to subscriptions.
Need a hand?
App369 fixes Stripe bugs at a fixed price. If one bug is the whole problem, the App Fix Ticket covers it in two fixed-price steps: a $450 diagnosis that finds the root cause and gives you a fixed quote for the fix, then the fix itself. If subscriptions, webhooks and the customer portal all need setting up properly, the Stripe Billing Fix and Setup is $950. Or describe the problem and get a written quote.

Frequently asked questions
- Why did the customer pay in Stripe but not get access in my app?
- Most often the upgrade runs only on the success page, which the customer never reached. Grant access from a webhook such as checkout.session.completed or invoice.paid, pass your user ID as client_reference_id so the handler knows who paid, and check the endpoint's delivery log in the Dashboard.
- Why does Stripe work in test mode but fail in live mode?
- The live app is still using something from test mode: test API keys, a test price ID, saved test customer IDs or the test webhook signing secret. Each mode has its own keys and data, so swap in the live keys, recreate products and prices in live mode, add a live webhook endpoint and redeploy.
- Can I skip Stripe webhook signature verification to get it working?
- No. Without it, anyone who finds your webhook URL can send a fake payment event and get access for free. Fix the signing secret or give the route the raw request body instead.
- Can App369 fix a Stripe bug for me?
- Yes. The App Fix Ticket covers one reproducible bug in two fixed-price steps: a $450 diagnosis that finds the root cause and gives you a fixed quote for the fix, then the fix itself. For subscriptions, webhooks and the customer portal set up properly in one go, the Stripe Billing Fix and Setup is $950.
