Framer and Webflow to an appAdd a real app to your Framer or Webflow site

Framer and Webflow are built for marketing sites. When you need sign-in, a members area, a customer portal or payments that do more than a checkout, the answer usually isn’t to rebuild the site. Here’s what each platform lets you take with you and the route that keeps your site as it is. Or have the app built at a price agreed in writing.

Short answer

Keep the marketing site where it is and build the app as a separate web app on a subdomain such as app.yourdomain.com, with its own sign-in, database and payments, linked from the site’s menu and buttons. Framer doesn’t offer an HTML export, and Webflow’s export leaves out the CMS, forms and user accounts, so moving the site rarely pays.

What you can take with you, and the route

  1. 01

A Framer site can’t be exported

“Framer does not offer HTML export for self-hosting.” Framer Help, HTML export

Framer hosts and optimizes the site on its own infrastructure, and says that if you need to export source code, Framer may not be the right fit. Some third-party tools offer exports; check what they actually produce before relying on one.

  2. 02

Webflow’s export leaves the dynamic parts behind

“site search and forms (including file upload and reCAPTCHA) will not work on exported sites” Webflow Help Center, Code export

Code export needs a paid Workspace plan; Site plans don’t include it. The export is the site’s pages, styles and scripts. CMS content, User Accounts, Ecommerce, code components and localized pages aren’t in it, password protection is lost, and site search and forms stop working.

  3. 03

Keep the site and put the app beside it

Your team keeps editing the marketing site in Framer or Webflow. The app runs on a subdomain such as app.yourdomain.com, set up with a DNS record at your domain provider, as a web app with its own sign-in, database and Stripe payments. The site’s menu and buttons link to it.

  4. 04

    Bring the data across once

“You can export CMS Collections (including localized Collection content), Ecommerce Collections, and User Accounts in CSV format” Webflow Help Center, Code export

If the app needs what already lives in Webflow, such as members or a product list, export it as CSV and import it into the app’s database. Decide where each kind of data lives from then on, so nothing is edited in two places.

  5. 05

A phone app can come later, from the same web app

Build and prove the web app first. Once it works, it can be wrapped for the App Store and Google Play, which adds each store’s review steps. The phone app is quoted separately from the web app.

Questions

More on adding an app

Should I rebuild the site in code instead?

Usually not. The site already works and your team can edit it. Rebuilding it adds cost without adding what the app needs. Rebuild only when the site itself has outgrown the platform.

Will adding the app affect my search rankings?

It shouldn’t, since the marketing site keeps its domain, platform and pages, and those are what search engines rank. The app sits on a subdomain behind sign-in, so it adds no public pages to compete with them. No one can promise rankings either way.

Can you build it for me?

Yes. The Web App MVP Sprint starts with a paid written scoping: the users, screens and data, and a fixed price for the build. The app is deployed to your own accounts with the code in your repository, and your site stays with you and your team.
