Flutter runtime errorFlutter: “Scaffold.of() called with a context that does not contain a Scaffold”

A tap that should show a SnackBar or open the drawer throws: Scaffold.of() called with a context that does not contain a Scaffold. Scaffold.of(context) looks up the tree from the widget that owns the context. When that widget is the one whose build method creates the Scaffold, the Scaffold is below it, not above.

Short answer

For SnackBars, use ScaffoldMessenger.of(context).showSnackBar, which MaterialApp already provides. For the drawer or bottom sheet, call Scaffold.of from a context below the Scaffold: wrap the button in a Builder, or move the body into its own widget. To avoid the throw when there may be no Scaffold, use Scaffold.maybeOf.

Why the context has no Scaffold, and the fix

  1. 01

    Showing a SnackBar the old way

    “SnackBars are now managed by the ScaffoldMessenger, and persist across routes.” Flutter, SnackBars managed by the ScaffoldMessenger

    Older tutorials call Scaffold.of(context).showSnackBar. SnackBars now belong to ScaffoldMessenger, which MaterialApp creates above every screen, so the same context works. If it still fails, the context is above MaterialApp; use a scaffoldMessengerKey (see the questions below).

    ScaffoldMessenger.of(context).showSnackBar(
      const SnackBar(content: Text('Saved')),
    );
  2. 02

    Scaffold.of in the build method that creates the Scaffold

    “When the Scaffold is actually created in the same build function, the context argument to the build function can't be used to find the Scaffold” Flutter, Scaffold.of

    Opening the drawer from a button in the same build method fails, because that context is above the new Scaffold. Wrap the button in a Builder to get a context below it.

    Scaffold(
      drawer: const Drawer(),
      body: Builder(
        builder: (context) => TextButton(
          onPressed: () => Scaffold.of(context).openDrawer(),
          child: const Text('Menu'),
        ),
      ),
    )
  3. 03

    A cleaner fix for bigger screens

    “A more efficient solution is to split your build function into several widgets.” Flutter, Scaffold.of

    Move the body into its own widget. Its build method gets a context below the Scaffold, and the screen is easier to read.

  4. 04

    Code that may run where there is no Scaffold

    “To return null if there is no Scaffold, use maybeOf instead.” Flutter, Scaffold.of

    A shared widget used both inside and outside a Scaffold, such as in a dialog, should not throw. Use maybeOf and handle null.

    Scaffold.maybeOf(context)?.openDrawer();

Rather hand it over?

Fixed scope, fixed price, paid upfront. The work happens in writing; no call needed.

Questions

More on this error

Can I use a GlobalKey<ScaffoldState> instead?

Yes. Pass the key to the Scaffold and call key.currentState?.openDrawer(). It works from anywhere on that screen, at the cost of one more object to keep.

How do I show a SnackBar from code with no context?

Give MaterialApp a scaffoldMessengerKey (a GlobalKey<ScaffoldMessengerState>) and call its currentState?.showSnackBar.

Can you fix it for me?

If one bug is the whole problem, the App Fix Ticket covers it: a written diagnosis first, then the fix. If the app has more going on, the Launch Check is a written check of the whole app. Each issue found is rated critical, high, medium or low, with where it is and how it was confirmed. No issues worth fixing, no charge. If the Launch Check finds nothing rated medium or higher, Simon refunds the full $450. You keep the report either way. This applies to the first 10 Launch Checks bought after October 30, 2026.
