Flutter errorFlutter: “MissingPluginException(No implementation found for method …)”

You add a package, call it, and Flutter throws MissingPluginException(No implementation found for method …). When it happens while running the app, the package has native Android or iOS code and the running app was built before you added it. Hot reload and hot restart only update the Dart code, so the native side isn’t there yet. Here’s the fix in Flutter’s words, or hand it over at a fixed price.

Short answer

Stop the app completely and run it again, so the native code is compiled in. Hot reload and hot restart aren’t enough. If it still fails, run flutter clean and flutter pub get, run pod install on iOS, and check the plugin supports the platform you’re running on, such as web or desktop.

Why the plugin isn’t found

  1. 01

The app wasn’t rebuilt after adding the package

“Hot reload and hot restart only update the Dart code, so a full restart of the app might be required to avoid errors like MissingPluginException when using the package.” Flutter, Using packages

Native plugin code is compiled into the app. Stop the run and start it again from your editor or with flutter run.

  2. 02

Hot restart isn’t a full restart

“Full restart restarts the iOS, Android, or web app. This takes longer because it also recompiles the Java / Kotlin / Objective-C / Swift / JavaScript code.” Flutter, Hot reload

The restart button in your editor is a hot restart. A full restart means stopping the run configuration and starting it again.

  3. 03

    Stale build files

If a full restart doesn’t help, clear the build and fetch packages again, then run pod install in the ios folder before building for iOS.

    flutter clean
    flutter pub get
cd ios && pod install && cd ..
    flutter run
  4. 04

It fails only in flutter test

Unit and widget tests run without the native side, so a full restart won’t help there. Mock the plugin’s method channel in the test, or use the package’s own test fake if it has one.

  5. 05

The plugin doesn’t support this platform

A plugin with only Android and iOS code has nothing to call on web or desktop. Check the platforms listed on its pub.dev page, and guard the call or use another package there.

Rather hand it over?

Fixed scope, fixed price, paid upfront. The work happens in writing; no call needed.

Questions

More on this error

Do I need to change my code?

Not for this error on its own. Stop the app and run it again first. Change code only if the plugin doesn’t support the platform you’re running on.

What do you need to fix it?

The repository, the package that fails, and the platform and build type where you see the error.

Can you fix it for me?

If one bug is the whole problem, the App Fix Ticket covers it: a written diagnosis first, then the fix. If the app has more going on, the Launch Check is a written check of the whole app. Each issue found is rated critical, high, medium or low, with where it is and how it was confirmed. No issues worth fixing, no charge. If the Launch Check finds nothing rated medium or higher, Simon refunds the full $450. You keep the report either way.
