# SyntaxError: “Unexpected identifier”

> SyntaxError: Unexpected identifier. A missing comma, operator or bracket, a keyword typo, or TypeScript syntax in a .js file. How to find the exact spot fast.

The page or script fails to load with SyntaxError: Unexpected identifier (newer Chrome and Node.js add the name, as in Unexpected identifier 'b'; Firefox says unexpected token: identifier). The JavaScript parser reached a name where the grammar does not allow one, so the whole file stops before any of it runs.

**Short answer**

Go to the line and column in the error, then look at what comes just before the named identifier: that is usually where the mistake is. The common ones are a missing comma between object properties or array items, a missing + or other operator between values, a misspelled keyword (funtion, retrun, cosnt), and an unclosed bracket or quote on an earlier line. If the name is after type or interface, the file contains TypeScript but is being run as JavaScript.

## **Why the parser stopped, and the fix**

1. 01 ### **A missing comma or operator**
  > “A specific language construct was expected, but something else was provided. This might be a simple typo.” [**MDN, SyntaxError: Unexpected token**](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Errors/Unexpected_token) Two values side by side with nothing between them: object properties without a comma, a string and a variable without +, or two statements on one line. The identifier in the message is the second value.```
// Unexpected identifier 'email'
const user = { name: 'Ana' email: 'ana@example.com' };

// fixed
const user = { name: 'Ana', email: 'ana@example.com' };
```
2. 02 ### **A misspelled keyword** funtion load(), retrun value or cosnt x makes the parser read the misspelled word as a name, and the next word is then unexpected. Your editor’s syntax colouring usually shows it: the keyword is not highlighted.```
// Unexpected identifier 'load'
funtion load() {}
function load() {}
```
3. 03 ### **A bracket or quote not closed earlier** An unclosed (, { or string a few lines up changes how everything after it is read, and the error appears later than the real mistake. Format the file with Prettier: where the indentation goes wrong is where the bracket is missing.
4. 04 ### **TypeScript or other syntax run as plain JavaScript** type User = {...} or interface User in a .js file, or in a .ts file run directly with an old Node.js version, fails with an unexpected identifier, and import type { A } fails with an unexpected token. Rename the file to .ts and compile it, or remove the TypeScript-only syntax.```
// in a .js file this fails: Unexpected identifier 'User'
type User = { id: string };
```
## **More on this error**
<details>
<summary>**The line in the error looks fine. Where is the mistake? **+</summary>
Usually just before it: the end of the previous line or an unclosed bracket further up. Check the characters right before the named identifier first.
<summary>**It only fails in production. Why? **+</summary>
A build step may transform or reject syntax your dev server accepts, or an old browser does not support newer syntax. Check the built file and your browser targets.
If one bug is the whole problem, the App Fix Ticket covers it: a written diagnosis first, then the fix. If the app has more going on, the Launch Check is a written check of the whole app. Each issue found is rated critical, high, medium or low, with where it is and how it was confirmed. No issues worth fixing, no charge. If the Launch Check finds nothing rated medium or higher, Simon refunds the full $450. You keep the report either way.
