# Flutter: “Execution failed for task ‘:app:compileFlutterBuildDebug’”

> Execution failed for task :app:compileFlutterBuildDebug means your Dart code didn’t compile. Find the first Error: line above it and fix that file.

flutter run on Android ends with FAILURE: Build failed with an exception, Execution failed for task :app:compileFlutterBuildDebug, Process ‘command flutter’ finished with non-zero exit value 1. That Gradle task compiles your Dart code. The Gradle message is only the summary; the real error is a few lines above it, as an Error: line with a file and line number.

**Short answer**

Scroll up from the Gradle failure to the first line that starts with lib/ or a package path and says Error:. Fix that line. Run flutter analyze to list every compile error at once. If the error points inside .pub-cache (a package, not your code), the package is too old for your Flutter version: run flutter pub outdated and upgrade it.

## **Why the Dart compile step fails, and the fix**

1. 01 ### **A compile error in your own code**
  > “The dart analyze command performs the same static analysis that you get when you use an IDE or editor that has Dart support.” [**Dart, dart analyze**](https://dart.dev/tools/dart-analyze) A typo, a missing import, a type mismatch or a removed API in lib/ stops the build. The build log shows it as lib/screens/home.dart:42:7: Error: …, and the IDE usually shows it in red too. Fix each error flutter analyze lists, top to bottom.```
flutter analyze
#   error • The getter 'titel' isn't defined for the class 'Product' • lib/screens/home.dart:42:7 • undefined_getter
```
2. 02 ### **A package that doesn’t compile with your Flutter version** After a Flutter upgrade, an old package can call APIs that no longer exist, so the error path is in ~/.pub-cache/hosted/pub.dev/<package>. Raise that package to a version that supports your Flutter release, or replace it if it is abandoned.```
flutter pub outdated
flutter pub upgrade --major-versions --dry-run   # preview the new constraints
flutter pub upgrade --major-versions
flutter run
```
3. 03 ### **Stale build output** If the code analyzes clean and the build still fails, old generated files may be in the way. Clean once and build again; if code generation is involved, rerun it.```
flutter clean
flutter pub get
dart run build_runner build --delete-conflicting-outputs # only if you use code generation
flutter run
```
## **More on this error**
<details>
<summary>**It says compileFlutterBuildRelease instead. Same thing? **+</summary>
Yes, the same Dart compile step for a release build; with flavors the task name includes the flavor, such as compileFlutterBuildStagingDebug. One failure is release-only: icon tree shaking stops on IconData built from a non-constant value. Make those icons const, or build with --no-tree-shake-icons, and run flutter build apk --release locally before CI.
<details>
<summary>**The log is too long to find the error. What helps? **+</summary>
Run flutter run -v and search the output for “Error:”, or run flutter analyze, which prints only the problems.
<details>
<summary>**Can you fix it for me? **+</summary>
If one bug is the whole problem, the App Fix Ticket covers it: a written diagnosis first, then the fix. If the app has more going on, the Launch Check is a written check of the whole app. Each issue found is rated critical, high, medium or low, with where it is and how it was confirmed. No issues worth fixing, no charge. If the Launch Check finds nothing rated medium or higher, Simon refunds the full $450. You keep the report either way. This applies to the first 10 Launch Checks bought after October 30, 2026.
