# Flutter: “zsh: command not found: flutter” / “'flutter' is not recognized as an internal or external command”

> zsh: command not found: flutter, or flutter is not recognized on Windows: the Flutter bin folder isn’t on your PATH. How to add it on macOS, Windows, Linux.

The terminal says command not found: flutter (on Windows, flutter is not recognized as an internal or external command, or in PowerShell The term 'flutter' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program), even though the Flutter SDK is downloaded. The shell only runs programs from folders listed in PATH, and the Flutter SDK’s bin folder isn’t one of them in this terminal yet.

**Short answer**

Find the folder you unzipped Flutter into and add its bin folder to PATH. On a Mac, add export PATH="$HOME/develop/flutter/bin:$PATH" (with your real path) to ~/.zprofile. On Windows, add the bin folder to the Path user variable. Then close and reopen every terminal and your editor, and run flutter --version.

## **Why the shell can’t find flutter, and the fix**

1. 01 ### **The bin folder was never added to PATH (macOS, Linux)**
  > “At the end of your ~/.zprofile file, use the built-in export command to update the PATH variable to include the bin directory of your Flutter installation.” [**Flutter, Add Flutter to your PATH**](https://docs.flutter.dev/install/add-to-path) Add one line at the end of ~/.zprofile on macOS (the default shell is zsh) or ~/.bashrc on most Linux setups. Add the full path to the bin folder, the one that contains the flutter file (for example .../flutter/bin). If it still fails in a new tab, put the same line in ~/.zshrc; with bash, use ~/.bashrc (bash: flutter: command not found).```
# ~/.zprofile
export PATH="$HOME/develop/flutter/bin:$PATH"

# check
which flutter
flutter --version
```
2. 02 ### **Windows: the Path variable is missing the entry**
  > “To run flutter and dart commands in a terminal on Windows, add the Flutter SDK's bin directory to the Path environment variable.” [**Flutter, Add Flutter to your PATH**](https://docs.flutter.dev/install/add-to-path) In Environment Variables, edit Path under your user variables, add the full path to flutter\bin (for example %USERPROFILE%\develop\flutter\bin), and move it to the top. Avoid folders that need admin rights, such as Program Files.
3. 03 ### **The terminal or editor was open before the change**
  > “To apply this change and get access to the flutter tool, close and reopen all open Zsh sessions in your terminal apps and IDEs.” [**Flutter, Add Flutter to your PATH**](https://docs.flutter.dev/install/add-to-path) PATH is read when a terminal or editor starts. A window opened before you edited the file still has the old PATH, and so do terminals inside VS Code or Android Studio until you quit and reopen the app.
4. 04 ### **The line went into the wrong file, or the SDK moved** On a Mac with bash, or with a custom shell, ~/.zprofile isn’t read; use your shell’s file. If you moved or renamed the Flutter folder, update the path, and check the SDK was fully extracted: ls <your-path>/bin/flutter must list the file. echo $PATH shows what the shell actually has. On a Mac, brew install --cask flutter is a quick alternative that puts flutter on PATH for you.
## **More on this error**
<details>
<summary>**It works in Terminal but not in VS Code. Why? **+</summary>
VS Code reads PATH when it starts. Quit it fully and reopen it, or set the Flutter SDK path in the Dart extension’s settings (dart.flutterSdkPath).
</details>
<details>
<summary>**Do I need to add dart to PATH too? **+</summary>
No. The Flutter bin folder includes dart, so one PATH entry gives you both commands.
<summary>**Can you fix it for me? **+</summary>
If one bug is the whole problem, the App Fix Ticket covers it: a written diagnosis first, then the fix. If the app has more going on, the Launch Check is a written check of the whole app. Each issue found is rated critical, high, medium or low, with where it is and how it was confirmed. No issues worth fixing, no charge. If the Launch Check finds nothing rated medium or higher, Simon refunds the full $450. You keep the report either way.
